Published on the occasion of his solo exhibition, Kevin McNamee-Tweed’s Words is a collection of drawings that explore language in visual terms. Although there are more than 150 works and a wide variety of subject matter and techniques, as a whole there is a sense of stylistic unity due in large part to the unique paper tone of the printed object. The originals were made with Sumi ink on Rives BKF Tan watercolor paper, but for the purposes of this publication, the images were converted to grayscale and printed on “honeycomb” paper. This printing technique mimics the effect of the original work with considerable success but also manages to create a new aesthetic sensibility which still feels authentic and ripe for the word play and visual richness in the images.

Some of these drawings offer a magnified view of a word, typically with something askew, often to the point of blunt and thrilling stupidity. In others, butchered colloquialisms are rendered in a heart-felt manner, immune to their idiocy and oblivious to their own revelation. Other pieces simply offer a chance to observe a newly conceived specimen of language while it endures the burden of its own dramatic scramble for definition. The collection as a whole embraces ambivalent and multiplicitous meanings and seeks to expose, mythologize, or reanimate words.

Published by Punctum Books in conjunction with Human Sciences Press, Words was designed by Jared Ritz, Max Koch, and Kevin McNamee-Tweed and was printed by Koch Printing in Austin, Texas.
